Sembcorp Green Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, signed an MOU with Japan’s Sojitz Corporation and Kyushu Electric Power to pursue opportunities for green ammonia production in India for export to Japan.
The deal was presented at a recent Asia Zero Emission Community Leaders meeting hosted by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Japan aims to import 3 million metric tons of ammonia for fuel by 2030, rising to 30 million by 2050, to support its 2050 net zero emissions goal. The partnership reflects the countries’ commitment to developing cross-border hydrogen supply chains.
Under the MOU, the consortium will seek opportunities to supply green ammonia from India to Japan. If a final investment decision is made and supply arrangements finalized, the parties will construct green ammonia facilities in India, with Sembcorp as lead developer. Sojitz and Kyushu Electric will use their energy trading and supply capabilities to transport the green ammonia to Japan and secure Japanese offtakers.
Sembcorp is working with partners on hydrogen and derivatives as a low-carbon solution. The MOU leverages Sembcorp’s established India presence, including 3.7GW of renewables capacity, and supports its brown to green portfolio transformation.
