The much-awaited Indian consulate is set to open in the greater Seattle area. The December 7th welcome reception for India’s newly appointed Consul General in Seattle, Prakash Gupta, gathered city officials, foreign consuls, and Indian community leaders.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and Seattle University law professor Sital Kalantry offered remarks welcoming Consul General Prasad and his wife Neha to Seattle.
Mayor Harrell noted the rapidly growing local Indian diaspora community’s economic, cultural, and social contributions. He called India’s decision to locate its 10th permanent U.S. mission in Seattle an important advancement of the Pacific Northwest and India’s growing bonds.
Kalantry said Seattle University looks forward to partnering with the Consul General to build India-Seattle bridges promoting dialogue, collaboration, and education reform.
The Seattle consulate will have an exceptionally large jurisdiction spanning Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Alaska, Nebraska, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota. One key initiative will be establishing direct flights between India and Seattle.
Consul General Prasad who was previously posted in Indonesia, New York ,and China, said Seattle’s innovative businesses and dynamic Indian diaspora make it an exciting posting. He called India’s expanding U.S. ties historic and said he feels honored but humbled to raise India’s flag in Seattle as the community continues to grow.
The event underscored the Seattle region’s rapidly developing social, cultural, and economic bonds with India. Attendees welcomed Consul General Prasad, and speakers emphasized shared hopes for expanded bilateral educational exchanges, business partnerships, connectivity, and cooperation between India and the Pacific Northwest.
