Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is significantly increasing its imports from India according to Reuters. The data, sourced from bill of lading figures provided by Import Yeti, indicates a notable shift in Walmart’s sourcing patterns.
The company shipped 25 percent of its U.S. imports from India between January and August this year, compared with just 2% in 2018.
China is still the biggest country for Walmart for importing goods. But the rising costs of shipping goods from China, as well as escalating political tensions, are encouraging large U.S. companies to source their requirements from more countries including India, Vietnam and Thailand.

India has emerged as a key component of Walmart’s efforts to build that manufacturing capacity, Albright said. The company is currently sourcing $3 billion worth of goods from India each year.
India, whose stock market has risen to record highs this year, is viewed as the country best equipped to outperform China in low-cost, large-scale manufacturing.
