The Biden administration continues to seek the expeditious confirmation of the Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti as the ambassador to India, following a long delay in the confirmation of his nomination.
The post of the U.S. Ambassador to India has been vacant since early 2021 when the previous U.S. envoy Kenneth I Juster completed his tenure. The current U.S. head of mission in India is A Elizabeth Jones, who is serving as the Chargé d’Affaires in the absence of a full-time ambassador.
In January this year, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmed the nomination of Garcetti to be the U.S. Ambassador to India. However, the nomination needed to be confirmed by a majority of the U.S. Senate.

The White House said it respects the U.S. relationship with India and considers Garcetti’s appointment as the U.S. envoy a priority.
