Electronics manufacturing in India is currently in a boom period, thanks partly to the Government’s production-linked incentives (PLI), for ten sectors that include telecom, automobiles and pharmaceuticals among others.
In the telecom sector, there are PLIs for three categories: telecom equipment, mobile phones, and IT hardware products. PLI has helped both Indian and foreign companies.
Telecommunications
Indian subsidiaries of global companies that have benefited from the PLI include Commscope, Flex – knows as Flextronics Technologies India, Foxconn Technology, Jabil Circuit India, Nokia Solutions and Networks India, Rising Stars Hi-Tech, and Sanmina-SCI.
Indian companies include Akashastha Technologies, Dixon Electro Appliances, HFCL Technologies, ITI, Neolync Tele Communications, Syrma Technology, Tejas Networks, and VVDN Technologies.
Product lines such as core transmission equipment, 4G/5G, next-generation radio access network and wireless equipment, and access and customer premises equipment (CPE). IoT access devices and other wireless equipment, enterprise equipment, including switches and routers are also included.
Mobile Phones
In the mobile phones category there are two segments — global and local.
Global mobile phone manufacturing companies approved are Samsung, Rising Star, Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron, and Pegatron. The last three companies mentioned are contract manufacturers for Apple iPhones.
Indian companies approved in this segment include Lava, Bhagwati (Micromax), Padget Electronics, UTL Neolyncs, and Optiemus Electronics.
Six other companies were approved under the Specified Electronic Components Segment, including AT&S, Ascent Circuits, Visicon, Walsin, Sahasra, and Neolync.

IT Hardware
Both local and global companies get the benefit of the PLI in the manufacture of IT hardware.
SFO Technologies is doing well, and is placed at #2 spot after Dixon. State-owned Bharat Electronics (BEL), Vihaan Networks, Paramount, are gearing up production.
BEL manufactures electronic products and systems for India’s army, navy and air force. It has also diversified into other fields such as homeland security solutions, space electronics, cybersecurity and medical electronics to name a few.
Vihaan Networks’ area of specialization is in mobile broadband networks, homeland security, tactical communications, mobile and wireless signal intelligence.
Paramount manufactures power cables, telecom cables, including optical fiber cables, jelly-filled cables, Fiber-To-The Home cables, control cables, domestic cables, including building and solar, special cables for the railways and for fire survival.
