Government to Make India a Manufacturing Hub for Electronics

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has formed an advisory board which hopes to make India a $300 billion electronics manufacturing hub by 2026. Called the “Digital India Electronics Mission $300 Billion,” the board is made up of representatives from key domestic and international electronics companies such as Lava, Samsung, Apple, HP, Dell, Foxconn, Intel and Coconics, as well as industry bodies.

The decision for forming the board came from a report published by the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) which is the apex industry body for the mobile and electronics industries. It outlined the strategies, challenges, and policy work needed to achieve the $300 billion target.

According to the  ICEA report, mobile manufacturing must expand from $30 billion in 2021 to $126 billion by 2026, while IT hardware manufacturing must increase from $3 billion to $25 billion, in order to meet the $300 billion target. The board will also consider expanding their focus to other categories such as wearables and LED lights.
