Unilever Funds Indian Personal Care Startup

India-based online cosmetic company Plum, is  100% vegan. Currently the brand is carried by Amazon, Flipkart, Nyka, Myntra and beauty chain Health and Glow.

Shankar Prasad, the founder, is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He spent eight years at Hindustan Unilever Ltd and has an MBA from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. He worked at McKinsey and Everstone Capital, before he founded Plum in 2012.

The company has over 75 SKUs and has also expanded into the men’s grooming and skin care space under the name PHY. Says Prasad, “Men do have the same concerns as women, it’s just expressed very differently.”

London-based Unilever Ventures invested an undisclosed amount in the startup. Prasad plans to use the funding to develop and expand the company’s portfolio, focus on stronger online presence, and increase customer engagement, and distribution. “We are looking to expand in India. There is a lot to do in terms of products and retail distribution, Prasad adds.

Plum plans to launch new products soon. They recently released a body care range called BodyLovin’ which includes scrubs, moisturizers, oils and body butters.
