India's Telcos to Install 57,000 Mobile Towers in Rural Areas

Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s minister for communications, said that telecom companies in the country planned to set up 57,559 towers for mobile services in the rural areas by 2020.

“The reasons for not having mobile services in all villages include remote and tough terrain, areas diversely located with a scattered population, and commercially non-viable operations.

“Mobile coverage in villages is being provided in a phased manner,” the minister added. State owned BharatNet will offer broadband connectivity to all 250,000 local self-government organizations in India.
