Stamford, CT-headquartered World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., (WWE) held its first tryout in Mumbai, India to scout for its next Superstar. Featuring more than 70 prospects from throughout the country, the camp was the biggest tryout in WWE history. During the four-day tryout, WWE selected Indian athletes to train at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.
Overseeing the camp in Mumbai were WWE Performance Center head coach Matt Bloom, with assistance from coaches Robbie Brookside, Sarah Stock and Hartley Jackson; referee Darryl Sharma; as well as NXT and NXT UK Superstars Kavita Devi, Saurav Gurjar, Rinku Singh, Jeet Rama and Jinny. The first day of camp also included a visit by The New Day’s Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods.
WWE’s director of Talent Development Canyon Ceman said the company wanted an Indian talent pipeline to be the most robust of any their international markets. “We want to serve this passionate fan base with localized content. 89 million Indians watch WrestleMania, 50 million watch RAW and SmackDown every week, and 25 million watch Sunday Dhamaal and we know that this audience needs to be super served with localized content and athletes.”
