India seeks foreign companies that will produce the raw materials used for manufacturing bulletproof vests, in the country. Currently, Indian companies that produce such vests import the raw materials from China. India’s government projects that more than 300,000 bulletproof vests will be required by the Indian armed forces.

According to V. K. Saraswat, a former chief of state-owned Defense Research Development Organization, the Prime Minster’s Office has asked India’s Niti Aayog, the national think tank, to prepare a road map to encourage manufacturing of lightweight bulletproof vests in the country. He added that the Bureau of Indian Standards has finalized quality norms for these vests and future tendering will be per the Bureau’s norms.
If lightweight bulletproof vests and helmets are produced in bulk in the country, it will ensure low-cost supplies and reduce the existing wait times to procure the equipment from abroad.
