India's InnAccel Technologies Launches Neonatal CPAP Device

Bangalore-based InnAccel Technologies launched Saans ( meaning ‘breath’ ) the world’s first infrastructure-independent, portable, neonatal CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure system which provides breathing support to critically ill neonates with Respiratory Distress Syndrome. The device can be used in resource-poor settings and during transportation to the neonatal intensive care unit. Developed by Coeo Labs, a division of InnAccel, SAANS is the only CPAP device with multiple power options, including a patented manual mode.

The device was conceptualized in collaboration with Dr. Kristian Olson in U.S.A. and Dr. Data Santorino in Uganda of the Consortium of Affordable Medical Technologies (CAMTech), and has been designed, engineered, and manufactured in India. Based at Massachusetts General Hospital Global Health, CAMTech is a global network of academic, clinical, corporate, government and non-profit partners, working together to drive health innovation around the world.

SAANS – for neonatal respiratory distress

Speaking on the product, Siraj Dhanani, founder and CEO, InnAccel Technologies, said, “Respiratory Distress Syndrome is a common breathing disorder in premature babies in India, causing 150,000 deaths annually. And, one-third of these deaths occur while the infants are being transported to a neonatal intensive care unit. In rural areas where facilities are limited, many babies don’t even get the opportunity to receive CPAP treatment. Also, CPAP devices that are currently available in the market are not just expensive, but also designed only for use in the neonatal intensive care units. We wanted to address this gap with our unique offering. We are truly grateful to the Government for funding the SAANS project.”
