India’s federal minister for Health, J.P. Nadda said, “The Health Ministry is working very hard for the effective implementation of Ayushman Bharat, or the National Health Protection Mission, for a healthy, productive, and prosperous India.”
Ayushman Bharat will provide 500 million individuals comprehensive primary healthcare services as well as secondary and tertiary care. “Initially spanning almost 1,300 [medical] procedures under 20 different specialties, this will be the largest government-funded health protection scheme in the world,” Nadda added.
Other Health Ministry initiatives include:
–> Universal screening for the prevention and management of five common non communicable diseases: diabetes, hypertension, cancer of the oral cavity, breast, and cervix
–> A new initiative called AMRIT Deendayal, — an acronym for Affordable Medicines; Reliable Implants for Treatment — will provide medicines for cancer; cardiovascular diseases, and cardiac implants at significantly reduced prices
–> Jan Aushadhi (peoples’ medicines) stores will dispense quality affordable essential medicines to people in needOn September 1, the first claim was raised under Ayushman Bharat when a baby girl was born through caesarean section at Kalpana Chawla Hospital in India’s northern state of Haryana. A claim $126.22 was paid to the hospital by Ayushman Bharat, Haryana, according to Dr. Dinesh Arora, deputy CEO of the National Health Protection Mission.
