Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Samsung India’s new mobile handset manufacturing facility at Noida, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, July 9, 2018. Accompanied by senior members of his cabinet, officials, as well as industry captains, South Korean President Moon Jae-in marked his first ever state visit to India. He also visited the largest Samsung plant. First Lady Kim Jung-sook accompanied the president.

In India, Samsung is the market leader across mobile segments, with a current production of 67 million smartphones. Once the new plant starts, the company will manufacture nearly 120 million mobile phones. It currently has over 10 percent of its overall production in India, and aims to increase this to 50 percent over the next three years.

Samsung invested nearly $60 million in the new 35-acre electronics facility at Noida. Besides the factory at Noida, Samsung also has a production unit at Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, five R&D centers, and one design center in Noida, and over 70,000 employees.
