Labels on Consumer Products Must Now Comply

India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs issued an advisory that from August 1, 2018, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2017 will come into effect.

These rules seek to regularize information on labels of pre-packaged commodities. Going forward, labels will require  mention of the country of origin, date of manufacture, quantity, expiry/use by date and manufacturer’s details, among other information about the product. Manufacturers will need to increase the font size of letters and numerals on labels, so that consumers can easily read them. Providing bar coding/quick response (QR) coding is voluntary.

The government stated that for the month of August there will be no penalty for shortcomings in the mandatory font size.
