India is Largest Shrimp Supplier to U.S.

Surpassing 60 other countries of the world, India emerged as the largest supplier of shrimp to the United States of America. Between January and December last year, the U.S. imported over 650,000 tons of shrimps from India – more than 32 percent of its total consumption. Value-wise, the U.S. imported $2.17 billion  in 2017, up by 45 percent from the previous year.

Lower anti-dumping duty and opening up of this market by U.S. buyers has allowed Indian exporters to send more products to the U.S.A.,” said Tara Patnaik, chairman, Falcon Marine Exports Ltd, the largest seafood exporter in country.

India’s shrimp processing companies have benefited by using technology. Additionally, they were able to boost yields and improve sustainability through direct engagement at the farm level. The number of cases of shipment rejection, which a couple of years ago was a major bottleneck for sales, has now reduced. These practices have also contributed to increased exports from India.
