At a recently held conference in New Delhi on handlooms — the mechanical usage of weaving looms by India’s weavers — India’s Ministry of Textiles emphasized on the need to introduce intellectual property protection for this sector.

“Each weaver creates unique designs and their craftsmanship needs to be protected and acknowledged. It is important to ensure a framework where intellectual protection rights can be introduced and ensured for handloom weavers”, said Minister for Textiles Smriti Irani. She added that handloom fabrics are the country’s legacy and their potential needs to be positioned and acknowledged not only within India, but also globally reports Apparel Resources.
