India to develop own AWACS aircraft

According to the Defense Minister A.K Antony, three Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) aircraft are now operating in the Indian Air Force. The aircraft are meant as force multipliers for specific area cover in Net Centric Operations and not for the surveillance of the country.

IAF is keen to acquire additional AWACS with the goal of enhancing the airborne surveillance and control capabilities of the Indian Air Force. A project proposal for indigenous development of AWACS  by the Defense Research & Development Organisation has already been approved by  India top level Cabinet Committee on Security on 12th February 2013.  This development is expected to be completed in 84 months.
