Manufacturing Industry in India

Manufacturing Industry in India: India is fast emerging as a global manufacturing hub with a large number of multinational companies shifting their manufacturing base to the country.

According to a United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), India was ranked number nine in manufacturing output producer list in 2009. It surpassed Canada, Brazil and Mexico to move up from the 12th place which it held in 2008.

India is among the global top ten producers in the following sectors:

  • Basic metals
  • Electrical machinery and Apparatus
  • Transport equipment, Trailers and semi-trailers
  • Textiles
  • Leather, Leather products, and Footwear
  • Coke, Refined petroleum products, Nuclear Fuel
  • Chemicals and Chemical products.

Moreover, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data for February 2010 shows a robust growth of 16 percent in the manufacturing sector as compared to February 2009. The cumulative growth during April-February 2009-10 over the period of 2008-09 was 10.5 percent.
