Paul is founder of the leading UK global steel and engineering group Caparo. Born in 1931 Jalandhar in India, he studied both in India and in the U.S., obtaining his Master’s degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He first came to the U.K. in 1966 for his daughter Ambika’s leukemia treatment, but she succumbed to the disease. In 1968, he founded the Caparo in UK in memory of his daughter, which was followed by a series of steel company acquisitions. The Caparo Group is today run by his sons and has operations in Europe, North America, and Asia.
He was knighted by the Queen in 1978, receiving the title of Lord Paul of Marylebone. In recognition of his achievements, the Indian Government awarded Swaraj Paul the Padma Bhushan (the third highest civilian award) in 1983. Lord Swaraj Paul is widely lauded for his philanthropic efforts mainly through the Ambika Paul Foundation, which promotes education, culture, and health around the world.
