Tea Companies in India: India is the world’s largest tea producer, and the third largest exporter after Sri Lanka and Kenya. India’s tea markets have just recently become computerized. Electronic trading, which is going into effect to enable fairer prices and lower transaction costs, is seen as a positive movement by the Indian Tea Board. The Indian Tea Board, the government body that sets the rules for tea sales in India, feels that electronic trading will be a way to help planters who have been hit hard by low tea prices for much of the past decade.
Among the largest producers of tea in the country, Apeejay has a workforce of 40,000 and produces close to 25 million kilograms of tea a year. The UK’s third largest tea brand, and over 100 year-old iconic brand, Typhoo, was acquired by Apeejay.
Major tea companies, such as Tata Tea, have been welcomed into China to substantially increase their market presence and investment. In May of 2007, Tata tea took a major step in penetrating China’s tea market in signing a joint venture agreement with Zhejiang Tea import and Export in east China’s Zhejiang Province. The object of the venture is to manufacture and market green tea polyphenols, other green tea extracts, cold and hot water soluble instant tea, liquid tea concentrates and other value added tea beverage products.
Tata’s brands, including Tetley, Kanan Devan, Chakra Gold, Gemini and Tata Tea have the largest instant tea processing facility outside of the U.S. When Tata acquired the UK’s Tetley Group in 2000, it was the largest Indian takeover of a foreign company to date.
