Stephen Schwarzman(14 February, 1947) is an American financier and philanthropist, known for his role as the co-founder and CEO of The Blackstone Group, one of the leading global investment firms. Beyond his business ventures, he is recognized for his philanthropic endeavors, including substantial donations to education and cultural institutions, and his authorship of the memoir “What It Takes: Lessons in the Pursuit of Excellence”.
As of April of 2024, Blackstone plans to invest $2 billion in India annually. Blackstone is invested in companies such as Mphasis, an Indian technology services organization. They are also a stakeholder in Aadhar, a housing finance company, and have acquired VFS Global, a market leader in visa outsourcing systems.
In 2021, Schwarzman met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss investment opportunities for Blackstone in India, with the aim to boost the Indian economy. This meeting led to plans to invest $40 billion in India. As of 2024, Blackstone’s foothold in India includes ownership of 40 companies, cementing its status as the nation’s largest commercial real estate operator. Schwarzman cites India as one of the company’s top performing markets.
In March of 2024, Schwarzman visited Gujarat in Western India to attend celebrations put on by Mukesh Ambani, currently one of richest men in Asia. These celebrations were in honor of Mukesh’s son Anant’s wedding later this year. (See this video for more information about this topic).
