Spices Products in India: Long before the Christian era, Greek merchants entered the markets of South India to buy spices. In 1497, Vasco Da Gama, searching for a new route to the spice lands of Asia, took his ships around the continent of Africa to India and back to Lisbon.
Today, India is the largest producer and exporter of spices in the world. The country produces about 75 out of the 109 varieties of spices listed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In 2008-09, the US accounted for 21 percent of Indian spice exports. The share of value-added products is on the rise and now account for nearly 60 percent of total spice exports.
