Meera Sanyal is former Country Executive and Chairperson for Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in India, a large international banking and financial services company with 10,000+ employees.
Meera Sanyal was born on 15th October 1961. She is an alumnus of Fort Convent School, Mumbai, Loreto Convent, Delhi and Cathedral and John Cannon School, Mumbai. In 1982, she graduated with B. Com. Degree from Sydenham College in Mumbai. She pursued MBA from INSEAD, France in 1983. She became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in 1996. In 2006, she completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School. Meera is the daughter of late Mr. Gulab Mohanlal Hiranandani, a gallantry award winner and author of works on Indian naval history.
Meera Sanyal began her career as a planning officer at ANZ Grindlays Bank. Then, she served as the Chief Operations Officer for the RBS Asia Pacific region. Since 1984, Meera served as the Chairperson and Country Executive for RBS Group in India. She joined RBS in 1992 to head up its Investment banking division from Lazard. She was the Chief Financial Officer of ABN Amro Bank in India. In 2001, she set up ACES, the bank’s Global Shared Services Company. ABN Amro was acquired by Royal Bank of Scotland.
Since 2013, she is Non-Executive Board Member of Pardan.
Meera Sanyal has been appointed the Chairperson of FICCI’s Financial Inclusion Committee. She has been nominated to TERI’s Business Sustainability Council. She serves on the National Advisory Board of AIESEC India, and is a Board Member of Jaihind College in Mumbai. In 2009, she contested parliamentary elections from the South Mumbai. In 2011, Sanyal was invited by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to join her International Council on Women’s Business Leadership (ICWBL) and member of the Global Board Ready Women’s (GBRW) group.
Sanyal was inducted into ‘AIESEC Hall of Fame’ by AIESEC International Congress, Poland. In 2006, she received the ‘Woman Banker of the Year’award from the Indian Merchants Chamber. She was honoured Karmaveer Puraskaar 2008 (Award for the best Corporate Executive Citizen) from iCONGO Confederation of NGOs. She has been awarded ‘Woman of Substance Award 2010’ by Rotary Club of India.
