Jeff Bezos(12 January, 1964) is the founder and CEO of Amazon. He is one of the world’s wealthiest people, founding Amazon in 1994 as an online book marketplace. Currently, Amazon is the world’s largest online sales company. Beyond his achievements in business, Bezos is also known for his ventures in space exploration with Blue Origin. Since 2013, Bezos has owned DC based newspaper The Washington Post.
Amazon has been in India since 2013. Now, many local business people sell their products on Amazon.in. In February 2024, Amazon India announced Bazaar, a fashion and lifestyle platform to sell products under $7.20 (600 rupees). In 2019, Amazon India launched Amazon Pay, a unified payment interface(UPI). India has been utilizing UPIs since 2016, allowing instant payments via mobile devices.
Amazon has over 70 warehouses and well over 50,000 employees throughout India. The country’s largest fulfillment center is in Bengaluru (also known as Bangalore), with a storage capacity upwards of 2.4 million cubic feet. Other facilities are spread throughout the country, from Maharashtra in the West, to Delhi and Punjab in the North.
Jeff Bezos has visited India multiple times. His first visit was in 2014, when he announced a $2 billion investment, and more recently he visited in January of 2020, appearing at an Amazon event in Delhi, where he declared that Amazon would invest $1 billion in India. During his 2020 visit, he proclaimed that the 21st century will be the century of India.
