Electronics and Computers Industry in India: The first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) was established in 1951 in Kharagpur, setting off India’s quest to enter the world of modern technology. But it was not until 1985, when Rajiv Gandhi urged the country to adopt technology on a large scale that india’s drive into IT really took off.

There are a number of multinational enterprises operate in the IT and electronics sector includes the following segment: chip design, communication software, systems software, and IT support.

In 2007-2008, the industry witnessed the a rapid growth rate of 28 percent in production and 14 percent in exports. Furthermore, exports by the computer services industry are expected to jump from $43 billion in 2007-08 to $78 billion in 2012.
