Surat has recently been renowned for its diamond-studded jewelry. The export of diamonds in 2005 earned India $15 billion. While most of the cutting and polishing is done on smaller carat stones, there are plans to expand workshop capabilities to accept larger and more valuable stones.
Surat is also well known for both its textile and silk production and its manufacturing of synthetic textiles. JARI, one of the oldest businesses in Surat, has 80,000 embroidery machines. There are also several industrial corporations in Surat such as Reliance Petrochemical, Essar, and L&T Engineering.
Transportation
Surat has an excellent roadway system, and the new expressways will be completed by 2013. There is also rail a system that connects Surat to other major cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi, and Jabalput. Furthermore, the new airport will be completed by June 2012. There is also a commuter bus service that has eco-friendly buses, and a rapid bus transit system is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. Ferries to Mumbai and Bhavnagar are also being planned. This city has a working port for shipping freight.
Education
Surat has a top engineering college known as SVR. There are two medical colleges and one Ayurvedic college in the city.
