Rajasthan, the “Land of Kings” is a desert state located in the northwestern part of India. It is bordered by Punjab and Haryana to the north, Madhya Pradesh to the southeast and Pakistan (Sindh) to the west.
The capital of Rajasthan is Jaipur with other big cities such as Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Jodhpur. The population of the state is 76 Million with a 2016 GDP of $107 Billion. FDI inflows totaled $1.3 Billion in 2016. The most commonly spoken language is Hindi with other prominent languages being Sindhi, Punjabi and English.
One of India’s premier Engineering Institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology has a campus in Jodhpur. Also, the Indian Institute of Management has a campus in Udaipur.
Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is Rajasthan’s only international airport. Rajasthan can be accessed by road via National Highway 8 which runs from Delhi to Mumbai and is part of the so-called Golden Quadrilateral. Many international travelers also fly into Delhi and arrive on NH 8 to Jaipur.
Doing Business in Rajasthan
Agriculture is the main industry of the state. A few of the crops grown here are cotton, tobacco, barley, wheat, sugarcane, oilseeds and pulses. However, it produces the highest amount of edible oil and wool in India.
It is a leading producer of major minerals such as zinc, copper and sandstone. The availability of feldspar and clay in the state makes it beneficial for firms operating in the ceramic industry for private firms such as Liberty Whiteware and Jaipur Ceramics.
Rajasthan has a significant jewelry industry, working on rubies, emeralds, sapphire and diamonds. Rug making accounts for an important part of the economy of the state.
A few of the IT firms that exist in the state are Tech Mahindra, a business transformation consulting firm, Genpact and Wipro Technologies.
Tourism
A famous luxury tourist train called ‘Palace on Wheels’ runs across the state of Rajasthan. Jaipur is known as the ‘Pink City’ in India Also in Jaipur, Hawa Mahal which means Palace of the Winds, Jantar Mantar which is an equinoctial Sundial and the Rambagh Palace which was the former residence of the King of Jaipur.
