Hyderabad (its twin city is Secunderabad) is the largest populated city in Andhra Pradesh with over 6 million people in the metropolitan area. Approximately 40% of the population is Muslim. Hyderabad is considered as the economic capital of Andhra Pradesh. It contributes 29.5% of the GDP of Andhra Pradesh, and 90% of the workers are involved in service industry.
Business
Doing business in Hyderabad: It is best known for its pharmaceutical corporations including Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Divis Labs, and Lee Pharma. Several biotechnology parks have sprung up including Genome Valley, Nano Technology Park, and Fab City. Some of the better known tech corporations with a significant presence in the city include Microsoft, Amazon, Lucent, AT&T, Bank of America, and Electronic Arts. Even Facebook has found a home in Hyderabad. Another claim to fame is the Telugu film industry which is one of the prosperous industries in this city.
Residential Population
The real estate sector has grown steadily since the 1990s. With the increase in the population, shopping malls have sprung up all over the city. There are also many top universities and colleges for the residents including schools of medicine, aviation, engineering, and biological research.
Infrastructure
The government, in response to the influx of people and businesses, has built several business districts to attract more industries. The new skyscraper district is home to the APIIC Tower. The outer and inner Ring Road system has alleviated some of the local traffic congestion. Moreover, there is a public bus transport system with 19,000 buses in its fleet. There is also a light rail transport system for commuters. The city’s new international airport opened in 2008, with the longest runway in the country.
