Barack Hussein Obama (August 4, 1961), after running against Hilary Clinton and John McCain in 2007-2008 for 44th presidency, became the first ever Black president in the United States. His famous slogan was, “Yes, we can” and in Spanish, “Sí, se puedes.” Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. (His birthplace is challenged in 2011 by Donald Trump, who was ridiculed for this.) He attended Occidental College (Los Angeles) then graduated from Columbia University (New York), both of which are very prestigious schools. In fact, when he attended Occidental in SoCal, one of his best friends , Vinai K Thummalapally, was Indian, and this was how Young Barack developed a fondness for Indian food and Hanuman, as well as a deep appreciation for Mohandas Gandhi. Vinai was appointed US Ambassador to Belize when Obama became President. Once in a press interview, when asked which historical figure he’d like to have dinner with the most, Obama replied, “Gandhi.” In November of 2010, Obama made his first trip to India.
He and his wife, Michelle, stopped by the Gandhi museum in Mumbai, as one of his first engagements. Obama is also the first American president to celebrate the Indian holiday of Diwali at the White House. He worked as a lawyer after graduating where he met his wife— First Lady, Michelle Obama. They have two daughters. In 2011, President Obama received much commendation for catching and killing the terrorist responsible for 9-11, the head of terrorist group Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden. He is notable for his powerful speeches. President Obama favors suits made by the firm of Hart Schaffner Marx; the suitmaker is a subsidiary of India’s S Kumar & Company, which bought the Chicago entity for $120 million in 2009.
