Anil Aggarwal is the founder and Executive Chairman of the Vedanta Resources Corporation, the largest producer of zinc and the second largest producer of copper in the world. With a net worth of over $3 billion (as of October 2013), he is among the richest Indians in the world. Born in 1954 in Bihar (India) and a school dropout, the ‘Metal King’ is a self-made man who began work as a scrap-metal dealer. He founded Vedanta in 1976 as a cable manufacturer and initially rose to wealth by working with the Indian Government on privatization of its mining assets.
However, a few years later Aggarwal moved to London frustrated with red-tapism and the constraints of raising capital in India. He invested in copper mines in Zambia, a decision that catapulted him into the category of billionaires. In 2007, Sterlite Industries, a subsidiary of the Vedanta Group, was listed on the NYSE in the largest IPO in the US by an Indian company. In December 2003, Vedanta was listed on the London Stock Exchange for about £1bn, making it a true global player. Although based in London, his business operations span UK, India, Australia, and Zambia. As a philanthropist, Anil Aggarwal intends to donate three-fourth of his wealth for education and nutrition of underprivileged children.
