Carpet Products in India

As one of the world’s largest producers of handmade rugs (known as carpets in India), India is responsible for 35% of the worldwide exports of handmade carpets. From 2014 to 2015, India’s carpet exports amounted to about $1.173 billion and are expected to grow by 9% by the end of 2016.  India exports about 90% of its rugs to more than 70 countries, the largest importers of these carpets being the United States and Germany.

The carpet industry employs over 2 million weavers and is renowned for its beautiful designs and intricate craftsmanship. These carpets come in many different styles, a few of which are hand-knotted woolen carpets, tufted woolen carpets, chain stitch rugs, pure silk carpets, and staple or synthetic carpets.

Handmade woolen flat weave “durries” are especially popular in the European and American markets. However, cotton rugs as well as contemporary carpets are preferred within India because of their easy maintenance and affordability. Although Internationally there is still a large demand for silk carpets.

The majority of Indian carpets are manufactured in Northern India in cities such as Bhadohi, Agra, Srinagar, and Jaipur. Other states that produce Indian rugs are Punjab and Andhra Pradesh.
