Harvard University– and MIT-founded edX will provide 2,300 courses that will be co-hosted on India’s Massive Open Online Course platform, SWAYAM. Anant Agarwal, CEO of edX, sealed the deal with Prakash Javadekar, head of the federal Human Resource Development ministry.
edX counts the world’s leading universities, nonprofits, and institutions as its members, including charter members Harvard University, MIT, Berkeley, Caltech, University of Oxford, EPA, University of Princeton, and Imperial College, London. It offers courses from the world’s best universities and institutions to learners everywhere.
SWAYAM — Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds — seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have poor access to the knowledge economy. The home-grown IT platform facilitates hosting of all courses taught in classrooms from grade IX to post-graduation that can be accessed by anyone, anywhere, and at any time. All the courses are interactive, and are available free of cost to residents in India.
