AirPhysio, the Australia-made respiratory device that helps clean the lungs of mucus and pollutants, partnered with Medsmart, distributor of healthcare equipment, and Apollo Hospitals, to make its devices available in India.
AirPhysio, short for Airway Physiotherapy, is a drug-free hand-held Oscillating Positive Expiratory (OPEP) device that:
- Vibrates the airways, which loosens the bond of mucus to the airway walls for mucus clearance;
- Intermittently increases endobronchial pressure (positive pressure in the airways), which assists in maintaining the clearing of the airways while a person exhales so that mucus does not become trapped as it moves up the air canal;
- Accelerates expiratory airflow, which facilitates the upward movement of the mucus through the airways so that it can be more easily cleared. This combined action of vibration and pressure results in the mucus moving progressively up your airways until you can cough it out.
Paul O’Brien, Global CEO of the AirPhysio and Better Breathing Group said “This is truly a prestigious occasion and we are proud to be partnering with Medsmart and the Apollo Hospitals Group to help change lives in India. The “health and wellness outlook is becoming stronger in India. The market is getting lively. There is already stiff competition from medtechs in the U.S. and the UK.,” he added.
In April 2022, AirPhysio won the India–Australia Business and Community Alliance Awards for Small and Medium-sized Enterprise of the Year.
AirPhysio’s device looks just like an asthma inhaler, and because it requires people to exert positive airway pressure as they exhale and is becoming popular with athletes for improving breathing capacity.
AirPhysio is currently working with the University of Sharjah on a clinical trial to help long Covid patients, and with MGM College of Physical Therapy in Mumbai for a clinical trial for people who survived ventilator conditions.
