Pet Care

India’s pet care industry is growing due to the increasing number of urban households, demand for companionship, and rates of pet ownership. Valued at $500 million in 2013, this sector grows about 20% annually according to Euromonitor International, a London-based market research firm. The pet food category grows 12.5% annually and is projected to surpass $270 million by 2019.

Constituting 85% of pets, dogs are the most popular companions in India. Northern India accounts for the highest number of pets. Cats and fish are the most popular choices in southern India. Dog food is the most prominent product in the sector, followed by cat food and fish food. In addition to food, dog treats and snacks are also large contributors.

Virginia-based Mars is the leading producer of pet food in India. It agreed to buy the brands Iams, Eukanuba, and Natura from Procter & Gamble for $2.9 billion. These will join Mars’ preexisting billion-dollar brands, Pedigree, Whiskas, Banfield, and Royal Canin. Minnesota-based Cargill, Inc. is also a major player. Its pet food brands Provimi, Purina, and Citura are prevalent in India. In 2011, the company acquired Provimi for $2.1 billion, establishing an animal nutrition franchise that spans 37 countries.

Dogspot.in is an online retailer of pet products and accessories. CEO Rana Atheya projects 200% annual growth in 2015 and sells over 4,000 SKUs now.

The pet service category includes boarding, breeding, training, and grooming. According to a Times of India report, the northern city of Lucknow is a center for dog breeders. The Kennel Club of India stated that there is a significant increase in the variety of breeds present at dog shows. Ramal Medical is a major veterinary service provider in India. Owner Aseem Singla stated that demand for veterinary services in the country grows 20-25% annually. Nikki Kapoor, the owner of Bark On Gourmet Doggie Bakery in Delhi, also founded Navarasas Aromatherapy, which supplies essential oils and other natural products for pets.

India’s pet care industry is growing rapidly as the middle class increasingly demands quality pet care and services.
