Working in India:
Tips for preparing to work in India…
- Before you leave, obtain a work permit from your Indian embassy, consulate or high commission. If it seem slight cumbersome, remember that it’s a breeze compared to getting a work permit for the United States!
- Talk to an income tax planner so you know how to file home country and Indian taxes and limit or eliminate any double taxation.
- Register with your embassy or consulate upon arriving in India. They can be helpful in settling down and in the case of an emergency. You may also need to register with the Foreigners Office of the Indian government
- Pay special attention to your spouse’s needs if he or she is travelling with you. They may be more stressed than you are, particularly if they are not working on a job.
- If you have school age children, inquire if there is an American school in your city. Some American schools permit citizens of third countries to enroll. There are also excellent “English medium” private schools in most major cities. The term “public school” in India refers to an elite private school, as in an English public school.
- Traffic can be excruciating in India, so choose the location of your home, office and schools carefully. Ask local people about commute time during rush hour.
- Don’t surrender your hotel room or interim housing until your home is truly ready. Obtaining fully-working utilities and reliable household help can take longer than expected and you don’t want to be unduly uncomfortable in a new country.
